While competing as part of an NCAA Championships caliber field in its fall finale at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, the LSU men's golf team posted a 54-hole score of 1ver par 882 in three rounds at Isleworth Golf & Country Club to take home a second-place finish in the event.
The Tigers actually matched their performance from last year as they earned their second runner-up finish at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in as many seasons.
The Tigers posted a team score of 10-over par 298 in Tuesday's final round en route to a 54-hole score of 1ver 882 for the event to finish 26 shots behind the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns for the team crown. Texas was the only team in the field to break par in the final round with its 6-under 282 as it walked away with the championship after firing an impressive three-day total of 8-under par 856.
LSU wrapped up the 2011 fall season with victories over nine teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50, which includes the likes of No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 Alabama, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 10 California, No. 11 North Florida, No. 16 Central Florida, No. 30 Florida, No. 33 Indiana and No. 44 TCU.
The Ospreys from North Florida took third place with their final total of 22-over 886, while the California Golden Bears and Indiana Hoosiers tied for fourth place overall with scores of 24-over par 888.
The Tigers actually cut four strokes off their 54-hole score of 22-over 886 in a second-place finish last fall that featured the likes of three-time All-American and 2011 NCAA champion John Peterson and two-time All-American Andrew Loupe in the team's tournament lineup.
"I'm proud of the effort our guy showed this week," said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. "I thought we played one of the better rounds of the day in some difficult conditions. When the wind is blowing like it is combined with pin placements as challenging as you'll face for a long golf course that's playing hard, fast and firm, you have a great appreciation for what it takes to compete on a day like today."
Winstead pointed to the start of the final round as the key to LSU's success Tuesday as the Tigers were 2-under par through four holes and even-par through five holes en route to their runner-up finish.
"We got off to a great start today," Winstead said. "The fact that we played the first five holes at even-par really showed that we were ready to play today. Four of the toughest holes on this golf course are in those first five holes. We didn't always execute the shots that we wanted to hit throughout the round, but there's no doubt that the mental focus was there and we were ready to play today."
The Tigers have been led throughout the week by a pair of top-20 finishers in sophomore Andrew Presley and freshman Stewart Jolly while competing at Isleworth for the first time.
Presley led the way by tying golf clubs for sale for 16th place overall in his first start for the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational as he carded a 3-over 75 in the final round and a 5-over 221 in 54 holes to set the pace.
While Jolly earned his third-straight top-20 finish this week, it marked the first of his college career in the five-man starting lineup as he posted a team-low 2-over 74 in Tuesday's final round for a 54-hole score of 6-over 222 to finish in a tie for 20th place. Jolly also tied for 19th place at the Squire Creek Invitational and tied for 14th place at the David Toms Intercollegiate while competing as an individual in each event.
Freshman Curtis Thompson matched Jolly's effort with a score of 2-over par 74 on Tuesday as he tied for 40th place in the final individual standings at 12-over 228 for the championship.
After earning top-10 finishes in two of his first three starts of the season, senior standout Sang Yi posted a 4-over 76 in the final round to tie for 25th place at 7-over 223. Sophomore Landon Lyons added his 3-over 75 to LSU's team total on Tuesday en route to a tie for 28th place at ver 224 for the event.
"Playing in the final group in an event like this with a young team like we have is a positive step as we go into the break," Winstead said. "I've been telling these guys since the beginning of the school year I know we have the ability of being a really good team. That might sound hollow at times when you are not really in the hunt. But we've started to show that here late in the fall season.
"While having the opportunity to play in a final group like we did today, the guys start to expect to play at that kind of a level with each event. They've worked hard this semester. We've really improved as a team this semester, and I know we can continue to take the right steps forward into the spring."
With the 2011 fall season now in the books, the Tigers will break for four months before returning to play Feb. 26-28 at the John Hayt Invitational in their 2012 spring season opener. The championship is ready to return to Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
