Take a sliced raw potato and rub on the mud stains. Soak the item in cold water for an hour and launder as usual.
Salt is a great absorbing agent for mud stains. It especially works great for carpets. Sprinkle it liberally on fresh spotted stains and allow to soak up the moisture.
