Good news! Nots allow to miss! The No. 24 University of Colorado womens golf team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2011-12 season here Sunday as the Buffaloes shot a 15-over par 303 and fell six spots to finish 14th in Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Challenge at 35-over par 899. The Buffaloes still finished ahead of three teams ranked higher than their own No. 24 ranking, including No. 4 LSU, No. 20 California and No. 23 Kentucky. The field is likely the best in which the Buffs have ever competed featuring eight of the top 10 and 17 of the top 29 teams in the Golfstat rankings. Only two lower ranked teams finished higher than the Buffaloes and one of them was host and No. 27 Tennessee (tied for fourth) and No. 36 Mississippi, who finished one stroke ahead of the Buffs at 34-over par 898. Overall, I think the biggest thing is that it was a great experience for us, both good and bad, CU head coach Anne Kelly said. If we can walk away from this learning to make some better decisions on the golf course, in the long run it will pay off for us. Its probably the best field weve ever played and you have to get your feet wet. We did learn that when we play well, we can play with anybody, but these other top teams just didnt make as many mistakes as we did and thats the difference. No. 6 Alabama held off No. 1 UCLA in the final round to earn the four shot victory. The Crimson Tide shot a final day 4-over par 292 to finish the 54-hole event at 1-over par 865, while the Bruins shot a final round 3-over par 291 to finish at 5-over par 869. There were then 10 strokes before the next group of three teams that closed out the top five. No. 2 Auburn finished at 15-over par 879 while Tennessee and No. 10 Southern California both tied for fourth at 16-over par 880. Sixth place and seventh-ranked Vanderbilt finished at 23-over par and the difference between sixth and 16th was 14 strokes. Im a little disappointed today because I really felt we couldve moved up the board if we played well, Kelly said. But you live and learn and if we can learn from this in the long run, it will be a good experience. Senior Jessica Wallace led the way golf clubs for sale for the Buffaloes, shooting a 1-over par 73 in the final round moved up to a tie for 44th overall at ver par 224. She was 2-under par with five holes to play but had three bogeys in a span of four holes to finish at 1-over. Senior Emily Talley had a solid round with just two bogeys but couldnt get any birdies to fall and finished her third round with 16 pars and two bogeys to finish 2-over par 74 was 34th individually at 6-over par 222. Sophomore Alex Stewart had five bogeys and a birdie to finish her final round at 4-over par 76 and finished tied for 53rd at 10-over par 226. Stewart ends the fall leading the Buffs in stroke average at 74.33 and her stroke count in relation to par of 2.1 both rank seventh best in CU history. There are positives to take from this, Kelly said. Emily looks like shes back on track, she played a couple of really solid rounds to close out the fall. Jess and Alex are both really striking the ball well. Sisters Jenny and Kristin Coleman both struggled a bit and shot ver par 80 in the final round, although getting there in different ways. Both also finished tied for 79th at 15-over par 231. Kristin Coleman had a pair of triple bogeys and played the other 16 holes at 2-over par. She tripled her first hole and then over the next eight holes played at 1-over with two birdies and then on her ninth hole, the par 4 No. 15, she got another triple and then finished out the final eight holes with two bogeys and a birdie to finish at ver. Jenny Coleman was even through her first eight holes with one birdie and one bogey and then she went 5-over on the next three holes with a triple bogey on the Par 4 No. 16. She then had a double bogey and bogey in her final four holes to finish ver. The Buffs will now have about three months off and get the spring seasons started in early February. The Buffs spring schedule is the hardest in school history and opens with the Arizona Wildcat Invitational from Feb. 5-7. The good news is that we have the entire spring ahead of us, Kelly said. The win at Washington was definitely the highlight of the fall. We pick up in the spring right where we left off in terms of a high level competition with Arizonas tournament, the Regional Challenge and the Sugar Bowl, among others. Next up for the Buffaloes is the groundbreaking of the George Boedecker, Jr., Golf Practice Facility, set for Monday (Oct. 24) and 2:30 p.m. at Colorado National Golf Club. The facility features five hitting bays and a 2,000-square foot short game room. It would be nice to have that right now for us to work on our putting, Kelly said. It will be a great asset to both golf programs, the University and membership at Colorado National. As for our team, thats what we need to work on the most, is our putting and it would be nice to have that ready sooner. This was a tough golf course and had challenging greens, and thats what well see all spring, so we need to sharpen it up a little bit.
