Women’s golf team takes home first at Clarion Invitational

The past few invitationals have been tough for the womens golf team. An eighth  and 12th place finish golf clubs for salewere nice, but not exactly what the KU golf team wanted. At the Clarion invitational, the womens team performed at their highest all season coming home with a first place finish under their belts.

The team played well on the first round of golf finishing with a 321 team score as well as first place going into the second day of golf. They led the team race in the first day by a comfortable 16 strokes. On the second day, they performed even better Left Handed Taylormade R11 Irons 4-9by earning a combined score of 317, four strokes better than the day before. They beat the second place team, Wheeling Jesuit University, by an impressive 31 strokes.

Individually, the team performed far better than any other team. Five KU golfers placed in the top ten after the entire invitational was over. Only one other team had more than one competitor finish in the top 10; Mercyhurst College had two in the top 10, neither of which were in the top five.

Leading the KU team individually, not to mention winning the entire tournament, was Chelsea Corbo.Left Handed Taylor Made Burner SuperFast 2.0 fairway woods At the Clarion Invitational, she shot a tournament topping 155 overall, just beating the second place finisher by one stroke. This win only fueled the already stellar season and career that Chelsea has had thus far. In fact, Corbo is putting up the best numbers in school history with a record breaking performance on day one. She shot the lowest score, a 72, that a womens golfer has ever shot on a par-72. This just adds to the many other records that Corbo holds on the team such as best average score in school history Left Handed TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons 4-9and lowest score on a par 70.

Overlooking Corbos outstanding performance, a team title isnt attainable by one golfer. Tied for fourth place overall were both Lauren Smith and Madison Houseal. Both freshmen shot a 161 in the tournament. Each put up career best numbers on the second day, Houseal shooting a 77 and Smith a 79. Two other notable performances came from Mindy Glatfelter and Jackie Clifton. Glatfelter shot a 163 in two rounds and placed seventh. Clifton shot 165 and took ninth respectively.

KUs womens golf team placed first above eight other teams. Corbo commented on the womens golf teams web site. She claimed, We are definitely rising to our true potential Left Handed TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 2.0 Driverand it feels great to get a win.

The team gets a little break for now, until it hosts the Golden Bear Invitational Oct. 8 and 9 two weeks from now.
